Over 150 Physicists gathered for the Annual Theory Meeting, Dec16-18. Speakers from Canada(1),France(1), Germany(2), India(1),UK(4) and USA(2) provided an overview of the current status of particle physics.

IPPP PhD student Daniel King received the St.Cuthbert's Society Postgraduate Prize for outstanding academic achievement.

Durham Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart Corbridge formally announced the renaming of the IPPP seminar room as the "Stirling Room" to celebrate the life and work of Prof. James Stirling CBE FRS, who was the founding director of the IPPP from 2000-2008. The picture shows the Vice Chancellor unveiling the picture of James which is now displayed in the Stirling Room.

Professor Keith Ellis was awarded the Paul Dirac Medal and Prize for his seminal work in Quantum Chromodynamics.

IPPP post-doc Aleksei Rusov was awarded the prize for the best international PhD thesis from his Alma Mater, the University of Siegen in Germany. Aleksei works since October 2018 in Durham and he is an expert on Light-cone sum rules, a method to describe non-perturbative effects in decays of hadron containing a heavy quark.

The IPPP was hosting the International Particle Physics Masterclass on Thursday 28th of March 2019 with close to 100 Y12/Y13 pupils from the regional schools. The students used real data from the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to look for signatures of the W boson. At the end of the event the results were discussed in a video conference with scientists at CERN and other pupils from Czech and Germany.

Dr. Andreas Kronfeld is visiting the IPPP within the DIVA program. During his stay he will also visit Glasgow University and Southampton University and he will give one of the keynote talks at the IPPP/Warwick Flavour workshop in April. More information about our visitor: Andreas Kronfeld is a theoretical physicist at Fermilab (Scientist II). He received his PhD in 1985 from Cornell University, studying under G. Peter Lepage. From 1985–1988 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the DESY in Hamburg, Germany. He has been at Fermilab since 1988, first as a postdoc and since 1989 as a staff member. In 1996, Kronfeld spent three months in Copenhagen as Visiting Scientist at NORDITA. In 2001, he spent three months as a Foreign Professor at Tsukuba University, Japan. In 2014, he was awarded a Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study of the Technische Universität München. IPPP invites applications from UK-based permanent academic staff for IPPP Associateships. Associateships are awarded to individuals or small teams, and are funded by the IPPP. Associateships are awarded bi-annually. The application deadline is either 1st of March or 1st of September. The main objectives of the Associateship Programme are: * provide support for small workshop(s) organised by the Associate, IPPP members, and others. * enhance interactions and enable new collaborations between the Associate, the community, and the IPPP. *support research visits (e.g. of a week) of the Associate and/or their students to IPPP and of IPPP staff/PDRA/students to the Associate’s institution. Former IPPP PhD student Matthew Kirk was awarded the Springer Prize for his thesis with the title Charming new physics in beautiful processes. Matthew is now a post-doc at La Sapienza in Rome.
