Deadline: November 13th, 2007

Description:

The LHC collider will start in summer 2008. A luminosity upgrade to this collider is now being planned, and the detectors for this upgrade will need to be designed by 2011, the timescale of this PhD project.

The detectors for the LHC upgrade will need to survive a radiation fluence an order of magnitude higher than the present design. To enable a reasonable signal to be obtained from the sensor after the full radiation dose the technology of the sensor must be addressed. One of the most promising technologies is that of the so-called "3D" sensor, which using micromachining technology to etch and dope thousands of swiss-cheese style holes through a silicon sensor. The group is working with commercial suppliers to make these detectors available for the SLHC upgrades. The ATLAS experiment has shown particular interest in using these sensors for the inner-layer of the experiment. The sensors also have potential applications outside particle physics, for example in detectors at synchrotron light sources.

You will work closely with industry in the development of their processing modelling their devices to improve fabrication. You will test sensors and sensor plus readout electronics in the lab both in Glasgow and CERN and at testbeams at CERN, with the aim of producing a fully functional pixel module for the upgraded LHC experiments based on the 3D silicon detector technology.

A CASE studentship is a PhD sponsored by an industrial company. The benefit to the student, in addition to the strong industrial link, is that he/she will receive an increased PhD stipend.
