Description:

This project will be supervised by two members of the in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey. The project will be in any of the group members areas of research. The members of the group have research interests across a variety of fields including but not limited to black holes, fluid dynamics, geometric analysis, integrability, supergravity, brane solutions, gauge/string dualities, higher structures, M-theory, and twistor geometry. You will join an enthusiastic group with an excellent international reputation and a lively community of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The members of the group have extensive collaborations and links with other research institutions world-wide. During your PhD you will also receive a comprehensive training in transferable skills such as project management, communication, and time management through our Faculty Graduate School. In addition, you will broaden your academic horizon by taking taught courses via national networks such as the national MAGIC consortia as well as our own in-house MSc courses.

There are no specific supervisors as this is a generic advert and the supervisor will depend on who is applying. Any academic member of staff of the Fields, Strings, and Geometry group is a prospective supervisor.

Funding information: Tax-free stipend of about £16,000 p.a. and UK fees covered. For international students, the difference between UK and international tuition fees may be waived by the University on a case-by-case basis. There is also travel funding to attend schools and workshops/conferences.

Eligibility criteria: Applicants should have a minimum of a first class honours degree in mathematics, the physical sciences or engineering. Preferably applicants will hold a MMath, MPhys or MSc degree, though exceptional BSc students will be considered.

English language requirements: IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Writing, or equivalent.
