Description:

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in the Department of Physics, in the areas of Astronomy and/or Astrophysics. We are open to all sub-fields within these disciplines. A recent area of growth in the Department of Physics has been in the application of quantum technologies for fundamental physics, which currently brings together research groupings across particle physics, theoretical physics, nanotechnologies and ultra-low temperature physics.  We would welcome applications that apply quantum technologies to establish new scientific directions in our research programme.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics or a closely related field, and have significant research experience and a record of high quality research. The post holder will be expected to initiate a new research group in line with the Department’s strategy to expand our activities in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The post holder will be expected to teach and supervise at undergraduate and postgraduate level with responsibility for the design, management and delivery of their teaching. They will also participate in departmental administration as requested by the Head of Department.

The research of the Physics Department is supported by GRID computing facilities, the SuperFab nanofabrication facility, the London Low Temperature Laboratory and the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science, with collaborations at CERN, SNOLAB, SURF, LNGS, J-PARC, CLIC, KEK, ESS and the Diamond Light Source, and in the SEPnet and the NExT Institute for Particle Phenomenology research networks. The RHUL Particle Physics group is active in Particle Astrophysics, direct dark matter detection experiments and theoretical particle physics. Further details can be found at https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/research-and-teaching/departments-and-schools/physics/.

The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.

We encourage applications from groups that are traditionally under-represented at this level in Physics and Astronomy. We are keen to attract a diverse applicant pool, and we are aware that some under-represented groups are typically less likely to apply for jobs unless they are sure they comfortably meet all the criteria. With this in mind, we invite all potential candidates to reflect on their strengths and experience in the broadest sense, including transferable skills where appropriate, when considering their suitability for the position. In all cases, we will select the best candidate for the role.
