Description:

PhD studentship
Precision Flavour Physics at LHCb Department of Physics at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom

We are seeking excellent candidates for a fully-funded 4-year PhD studentship with the Particle Physics Group at the School of Physics, University of Bristol, UK, to work on precision flavour physics and charge-parity violation at the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. We aim to fill this position as soon as possible.

The studentship is available from 1 October 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. It will involve the measurement of key CP violation parameters from the most recent data taken at LHCb. The studentship includes a stipend of £ 13,590 p.a., tuition fees (for EU-students – see below for details), support for travel and conference attendance, and the opportunity to spend an extended period of time on-site at the CERN. We offer an intensive postgraduate training programme.

Applications are invited from suitable candidates who have or are about to obtain a very good Masters-level degree in physics or a closely related subject, or an equivalent qualification. In addition to excellent academic credentials, candidates will need good interpersonal and communication skills in English, and the willingness and ability to work collaboratively in a team. Good computing skills are desirable.

Experience in computer-based data analysis (for example from work on a Masters of diploma thesis, summer studentship, etc) would be of further benefit. The available funding fully covers tuition fees at the level that applies to PhD students with “home/EU” status. Most EU citizens and several others fall into this category – for details see http://ukcisa.org.uk/student/info_sheets/tuition_fees_e_he.php. Other students will have to pay the (unfortunately substantial) difference in tuition fees between EU and non-EU research students (see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/academicregistry/fees). If you are a non-EU applicant, please indicate in your application if you already have funding in place that covers this difference (if you do not, yet, have a look at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/international/scholarships). The University of Bristol is member of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities, and has a long history in particle physics research, with one of the oldest particle physics groups in the UK.

Bristol’s flavour physics group is an active member of LHCb, NA62 and CLEO-c. The group recently obtained a substantial award from European Research Council to expand its activities on CP violation and amplitude analyses, which funds this studentship.

More information, and a link to the online application form, can be found here: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/research/particle/opportunities/

The position will remain open until filled. As we aim to fill it as soon as possible, if you are interested in this opportunity, we recommend you apply rather sooner than later, following the web-link above.
