The Opportunity:
The Higgs Centre’s goal is to achieve breakthroughs in our basic understanding of the universe. Our work spans a broad range of disciplines, covering all length and time scales. We place graduate school education in synergy with cutting-edge research. In the decade since the Higgs Centre was established, we have begun to realise this vision by creating a wealth of scientific activity and world-leading research. The appointment of Neil Turok as inaugural Higgs Chair in 2020, five new faculty and two five-year Higgs fellows in 2021, https://higgs.ph.ed.ac.uk/people/recent-appointments-21, this new position and planned future positions demonstrate the University of Edinburgh’s commitment to building the Higgs Centre into a world leading focal point for theoretical physics.
With this new appointment, we aim to bring an outstanding theoretical physicist to the Centre. We seek a highly creative researcher pursuing an original, ambitious research programme. The position is open to researchers in any area of theoretical physics, but we will particularly welcome applications from candidates who pursuing innovative approaches to theoretical particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, connecting those fields with other areas in physics and mathematics.
The Higgs Centre is committed to promoting diversity in theoretical physics and we specially encourage applications from women and applicants from other under-represented groups.

The University will formally request letters of reference for all longlisted candidates from their nominated referees. These letters are only consulted once longlisting is completed.
Nevertheless, candidates are welcome to invite referees to submit reference letters in advance to: admin-hr@ph.ed.ac.uk
