I graduated from Novosibirsk State University in 1965 and became a postgraduate in the Institute of Nuclear physics, Novosibirsk, Russia. I got my Ph.D. in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in 1968. The main topic of my research was physics in the electron-positron collisions. In 1968-1972 I held position of a senior scientist and a deputy group leader in the Yerevan Physics Institute, Armenia. In 1972 I joined Leningrad Institute for Nuclear Physics, first as a researcher, a senior researcher and then a leading researcher. The main research subject was the theory of strong interactions and physics in the high energy collisions. I got a degree of a Doctor of Science (Dr.Sci) in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in 1978 from the Leningrad Institute for Nuclear Physics. In 1991 – 1997 I was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics, University of Durham, U.K. In 1997 – 2000 I held a position of a Director of Research in the INFN-LNF, Frascati, Italy. From 2000 a Leverhulme Fellow, Professorial Fellow in the Department of Physics, University of Durham, U.K. From October 2015 a title of Emeritus Professor was conferred upon me. I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship 2015. In October 2017 I received a Royal Society of Edinburgh Auber award 2017.
I am a guest investigator at the Rockefeller University and associated scientist at the University of Helsinki. I am co- author of three text books on particle physics and of the Chapters in two of the volumes of the series Directions in High Energy Physics (World Scientific) as well as of the 15 reviews.

Research Area

Central Exclusive Production Processes and Forward physics in high energy collisions.

Research Interests

The calculation and analysis of the diffractive and central exclusive processes at the LHC, RHIC and Tevatron. In particular, the state-of-the-art models of soft diffraction and Exclusive Processes are developed and used for comparison with the data. Currently I am a convener of the LHC Working Group on Forward Physics and Diffraction.
