How to get to Ambleside

Ambleside is in the Lake District, in the north-east of England. It can be reached on the train, from various airports. Train schedules can be found at planning your (train)journey . There are also coaches to the Lake District (?Windemere), see the National Express homepage .

Oxenholme is a station on the main train line from London-Euston to Glasgow. From Oxenholme, trains run about once an hour to Windermere (20 minute trip), which is about 10 minutes away from the conference site by taxi or bus (5 miles). We are arranging a minibus to meet the SEVEN trains arriving at Winderemere after 14.40 (NB, we have added minibuses to meet the two trains after 19.00 too. Also, there should be a minibus meeting the 21.24 train to Oxenholme.) If you arrive outside these times, or the bus is full by the time you get off the train, then there is a local bus from Windermere to Ambleside (meets the train, see timetable , or the lake district journey planner ), which costs a 1.50 pounds, or you can take/share a taxi ( fare is 6 - 9 pounds).

Trains run more rarely and more slowly on Sundays. If you wish to arrive on Saturday (or leave on Saturday), you can stay an extra night at the college (30-40 pds for bed and breakfast). Please contact Linda Wilkinson if you wish to stay longer (til Sunday after the conference may also be possible).

The conference will be held at the University College of St. Martin, Ambleside Campus, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 9BB. The campus is located on the right hand side of the road just after leaving the town center in the direction of Rydal, directly opposite to the main Police Station. Note that this  was formely known as Charlotte Mason College so if you need to ask locals/taxi drivers for directions they may still know it by the old name.

Some maps

Here is a clickable map of the UK (very useful). Also, a map of the ambleside campus location , and a street map of the town for once you get there.

If you fly into London airports:

There are direct trains (Virgin...) from London-Euston to Oxenholme every few hours. Trip takes 3-4 hours (longer on sundays?).

London-Euston can be reached on the tube from Heathrow (one change), train plus tube from Luton, Stansted and Gatwick.

If you fly into Manchester airport:

There are direct trains (First North Western) from Manchester Airport to Oxenholme every few hours. Trip takes an hour and a half. Return fare from Manchester to Windermere is currently 17.40 pounds.

If you fly into Glasgow airport:

There are direct trains (Virgin...) from Glasgow to Oxenholme every few hours. Trip takes about two hours.

Liverpool airport?

Easyjet flies here from many places. Take  the airport   bus to Liverpool Lime Street central station and then a train to Windermere. The train from Liverpool to Oxenholme takes about two hours, with one change.

If you come by car

Leave the M6 motorway, if travelling from the south, at junction (=exit) 36 and take the A591(following signs to Keswick). The A591 forms the main road through Ambleside and the campus is located on the right hand side of the road just after leaving  the town center, directly opposite to the main Police Station. If coming from the north leave the M6 at junction 40 (Penrith) and take the A66 for Threlkeld, St. John's-in-the-Vale and the A591 to Ambleside.

See the journey planner at how to get somewhere in Cumbria for how to get around in the Lake District.
