The student seminar is a CPT tradition which has been running for years and years... The idea is to hold weekly seminars which are given by, and attended by, postgraduate students from the CPT group. The level is such that the majority of the seminar should be accessible to all postgraduate students within the group. As such, the audience should find it more informative and entertaining, and less intimidating, than other seminars. These seminars are meant to be very informal occassion - do interrupt and ask questions!!!
All students are welcome (and are, in fact, encouraged!) to give a seminar whenever they feel ready. It's a good opportunity to practise if you're going to be giving a formal presentation, or just to practise your public speaking and presentation skills in front of an appreciative and understanding audience. You choose the topic and title - usually something you're working on at the moment, but it could be something you've done in the past or just something of interest you've read about - and the length: maximum is an hour, minimum is about 20 minutes.
If you're interested in giving a presentation, contact Olly (o.a.hall@dur...) if you're in physics, or Danny (d.k.brattan@dur) if you're in maths and we'll find a slot for you!
No one seems entirely sure how or why it is that the IPPP agree to pay for tea, coffee and biscuits for the student seminar, but they do.
Student seminars are usually held once a week during term-time on Monday afternoons although the day and frequency may change to accommodate other activities. All seminars are held in OC218 (the IPPP seminar room).
