Closing Date:

Deadline: June 16th, 2022

Description:

The Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester will appoint up to three Research Associates to work on the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The Manchester ATLAS group consists of seven academic members of staff, 11 research staff and 17 PhD students. The group has a strong involvement in many areas of ATLAS physics analysis, including studies of the Higgs boson interactions, measurements of high-energy electroweak processes (VBS/VBF, multiboson production), top quark physics, and searches for new phenomena (dark matter, violation of lepton universality). The group is also heavily involved in ATLAS detector operations and performance, with long-standing contributions to ATLAS trigger and data acquisition, combined performance (jet/b-jet/tau reconstruction), and the Phase-II detector and trigger upgrades.

The postdoctoral positions are funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, the Leverhulme Trust and the European Research Council. You will play a major role in developing our physics programme at ATLAS, focussing on the areas of electroweak physics (multiboson and VBF/VBS), Higgs physics, and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. This includes the development of new analyses and new analysis techniques. You will also contribute to the ongoing operation of the ATLAS experiment in the areas of trigger and data acquisition (including real-time data analysis) or combined performance (jet/b-jet/tau reconstruction). Opportunities will be available to get involved with the wider collider-physics community, in phenomenology studies relevant to HL-LHC and FCC.

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in particle physics by the time of starting the position. You will have experience in data analysis and one or more of the following areas of particle physics: event generator modelling, trigger, detector operations, or object reconstruction/performance. The appointment will be from 1st August 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointments will initially be for a period of two-and-a-half years. You will be based in Manchester and will make frequent visits to CERN.

Along with your application, you should submit a single file containing your CV, list of publications, and research statement (max 2 pages). Two letters of recommendation should be sent to sophie.downes@manchester.ac.uk within three days of the closing date.
