The Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester has a vacancy for a Research Associate working on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN. The work is funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant ‘REALDARK, with a research program on dark matter and novel data-taking techniques spanning from 2021 to 2026.
You will be expected to work primarily on developing and commissioning the ATLAS software trigger and its new real-time analysis components for the LHC Run 3, and search for signs of dark matter using the datasets recorded with these new techniques.
Dissemination and communication of our results, as well as knowledge exchange with different fields and researchers will also take place within international initiatives and projects, such as the Dark Matter Test Science Project for reproducible and sustainable data analysis in the European Open Science Cloud within the ESCAPE project [link] and the initiative for Dark Matter in Europe and beyond [link], as well as within the High Energy Physics Software Foundation [link].
The Manchester ATLAS group currently has particularly strong activities and leadership in the ATLAS trigger system, as well as in dark matter studies and Standard Model measurements relevant to this research.
You will contribute to some or all of the following topics: real-time analysis, trigger and data acquisition developments and trigger menu commissioning, searches and measurements to discover or constrain particles predicted by dark matter models, interpretation of collider results in the context of complementary dark matter searches from other experiments, reproducible analysis workflows.
Requirements
The position requires a PhD or equivalent in particle physics. The candidate will have experience in particle physics data analysis and/or software development for reconstruction, triggering and calibration activities.

The position will be initially for a period of two years with a possibility of extension. The position will be based at Manchester, with an opportunity for long-term stays at CERN. The appointment will be from December 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.
