Rokos-Clarendon Associate Professor of Experimental Neutrino Physics

The Department of Physics proposes to appoint an Associate Professor or Professor in Particle Physics with effect from January

2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Pembroke College,

under arrangements described in the job description. The combined University and College salary will be in the range £48,114 to

£64,605 per annum plus substantial additional benefits including a College housing allowance of £9,750 p.a., access to a housing

loan scheme, a tutor’s allowance of £2,080 and a private healthcare scheme. An allowance of £2,804 p.a. would be payable upon

award of Full Professor title. Full Professors also have access to further merit-based pay awards.

The Associate Professor will join a vibrant community of particle physicists addressing the most significant issues in

understanding the fundamental laws of nature in and beyond the Standard Model. These challenges include the nature of dark

matter and dark energy, the origin of the generations and matter anti-matter asymmetry in the universe, and the stability of

mass hierarchies. The purpose of this appointment is to recruit a particle physicist who would join our renowned neutrino physics

programme spanning long baseline accelerator neutrinos at DUNE in the US and T2K, SuperK and HyperK in Japan, and

neutrinoless double-beta decay at SNO+. The successful candidate would also be expected to take a leading role in the design

and construction of the next generation of neutrino experiments. The post-holder will work closely with other particle theorists

and experimentalists in the department who are involved in many of the leading experimental collaborations. During the first five

years of the post, there is the possibility of a partial secondment of the University component of the post to the Particle Physics

Department (PPD) at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in experimental particle physics, or a related subject, and will have a proven record

of high-quality creative research in neutrino physics at an international level. They will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate

and graduate level. They will be expected to develop a world-leading research programme addressing the fundamental

challenges in our understanding of the laws of nature, to teach at undergraduate and graduate level, and to participate in

administration and governance of Pembroke College and the Physics Department.
