Applications are invited for a Lecturer in Energy-Frontier Physics, working in the High Energy Physics Group in the Department of Physics. We are seeking a candidate whose expertise will strengthen our academic mission to deliver world class scholarship, education and research.
 
The High Energy Physics Group has a strong experimental programme at the energy frontier. We are founding members of the CMS experiment and one of the previous Spokespersons is a member of the Group. The Group is playing a leading role in the characterization of the Higgs sector as well as direct searches for new physics. We seek a successful candidate able to make a major contribution to CMS data analysis in these or related areas, as well as the Phase 2 upgrades for High Luminosity LHC. Longer term, we would expect the appointee to become one of the leaders of HL-LHC physics exploitation at CMS and lead the Group's activities in future collider studies.
 
The High Energy Physics Group’s strategy for leadership in designing, constructing, and exploiting scientifically the leading experiments in particle physics sustains our high international profile. The Group has a strong ongoing experimental programme encompassing the T2K, Super-Kamiokande and future Hyper-Kamiokande experiments in Japan; the future neutrino oscillation experiment DUNE at Fermilab and SURF in the USA; the search for sterile neutrinos with SoLid in Belgium; the search for charged lepton flavour violation with COMET in Japan; the CMS and LHCb experiments at the LHC; the search for dark matter with the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment in the USA; the MICE experiment in the UK; the Atom Interferometer Observatory and Network (AION) project in the UK and the USA; SHiP and SuperNEMO activities and the development of future experiments and impact through the application of HEP technologies. There are also significant accelerator, phenomenology and Grid computing programmes. The Group is the host of two Imperial College Centres of Excellence: Centre for Clinical Application of Particles and Centre for High-Throughout Digital Electronics and Machine Learning. The successful candidate will:
  • Develop and lead an innovative research programme of international quality
  • Teach and examine students at all levels including lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervising research and PhD students, providing pastoral support and contributing to curriculum development work
  • Act as a coach and role model through excellent practice and mentoring of colleagues
  • Contribute to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity in Physics
  • Undertake appropriate administrative tasks in support of the Department’s activities
 
The essential criteria for this post are:
  • A PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or related field or equivalent
  • A developing national reputation and expertise in the field of energy-frontier physics
  • Evidence of contribution to the development and performance of colleagues through coaching or mentoring
  • Experience of preparing or helping to prepare grant applications for submission
  • A portfolio of research publications, confirming national standing (commensurate with career stage)
  • Experience of training undergraduate and / or postgraduate students
  • Experience of supervision of higher degrees (PhD)
  • Evidence of contribution to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to a range of audiences through a variety of methods and media. 

The post is available immediately and the starting date will be by negotiation.
