Although trained as a mathematician, I am now a theoretical particle physicist. I came to Durham in 1986 - to a joint appointment in Mathematics and Physics - having worked before that at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva. My particular research interest is particle physics phenomenology - the interface between theory and experiment. I have close contacts with experimentalists working at all the major high-energy particle colliders.
Between 1993 and 1998 I held a Senior Fellowship of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, which allowed me to work full-time on research. In 2000 I took up a new position within the University as Director of the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology. I stepped down as IPPP Director in August 2005 following my appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research). I currently divide my time between administration and research.
I was a member of the Physics Panel in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and was re-appointed to the Physics Panel (as Deputy Chair) for the 2008 RAE. I was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1999, and was awarded a CBE in the 2006 New Year's Honours List.
My wife Paula is the Senior Tutor and Vice-Master at University College, and Associate Dean in the Colleges Division. We have two children, Tom (b.1981) and Helena (b.1983).
