String Phenomenology

tries to make the connection between the results of formal string theory at high energy scales and the physics of the world around us, which is accessible to experiments.

Overview of different approaches

Can be found here. Short overview of research avenues that have been tried; ones that are successful; that are promising; that have been abandoned for deep mathematical reasons or because they were too dull at the time. This section will give a brief sketch of the development of string model building, linking to more detailed descriptions and the original papers themselves.

The Vacua Database

The long-term aim for this part is a searchable database of string vacua that will allow flexible searches through model space for interesting model parameters, ideally across the boundaries of the different approaches. One very good example of what we're aiming at is the searchable database by Tim Dijkstra, Lennaert Huiszoon and Bert Schellekens, on RCFT orientifolds with Standard Model Spectrum.

Computing Tools

An important aspect of string model building that is rarely included in publications are the various computing tools that groups use for their work. The lack of communication about tools has led to noticeable duplication of effort, both between groups, but also within institutions, with later generations of research students rewriting code from scratch for lack of information.

This part of the SVP tries to counteract a bit: we collect links to available computer codes (whether public or privately held), including short descriptions of the codes' capabilities and contact information for the authors.

At a later stage, this collection can be the basis to discuss code integration through common data formats; maybe even building a toolchain from string models down to event generators?

A first list is here.

Meetings

First discussions of the SVP on a larger scale happened in May 2004 as part of the Miniworkshop on The String Theory Landscape.

The SVP's wider reach in string model building outside the landscape proposals was discussed in November 2004 at the String Vacuum Workshop in Munich.

The SVP was discussed at String Phenomenology 2005, again in Munich

Strings and the Real World, Columbus, Ohio.
