57th Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics "LHC Phenomenology" 17- 29 August 2003 John Burnett Hall, St. Andrews, Fife KY16 9JF, Scotland |
General Information
SUSSP57 is the 57th in the Scottish Universities Summer School in
Physics series. A brief history of this series of Schools can be found here
(hyperlink). With the LHC under construction, and due to come on line
in 2007, it is timely for a summer school to focus on LHC
phenomenology. At a time when most of the experimental effort is
directed to detector construction and software development, it is
vitally important to focus young members of the experimental community
on the physics that the LHC will deliver. At the same time
there is a continuing need to bring more young theorists into
phenomenology, and in particular to inform them about the basis
properties and capabilities of the machine, detectors and software
required for physics analyses.
The range of physics covered by the LHC is very broad: from the
searches for the Higgs boson and physics beyond the Standard Model, to
detailed studies of Quantum Chromodynamics, the B-physics sectors and
the properties of hadronic matter at high energy density as realised
in heavy-ion collisions. The school will aim to cover all these at a
pedagogical level, starting with a basic introduction to the Standard
Model and its most likely extensions. Theoretical training will be
supplemented by courses on the detector capabilities and search
strategies.
In summary, the aim of the school will be to equip young particle
physicists with the basic tools to extract the maximum benefit from
the various LHC experiments
The fee for the school is 700 GBP; this includes meals and
accommodation in University residences.
