How to get to Durham
By plane Newcastle Airport has regular
flights
to and from Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest,
Cologne-Bonn, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Geneva, Hanover,
Malaga, Milan, Munich,
Oslo,
Paris, Rome and Stavanger as well as from London
and
other UK cities.
Newcastle Airport is situated approximately 8 miles north west of
Newcastle City Centre and ca. 25 miles north of Durham.
To get from Newcastle airport
to Durham by public transport
use the Metro which takes you
to Newcastle Central Station for about 2.40 GBP (trains operate every
20 minutes) and then connect
with the mainline train to Durham.
A taxi from Newcastle airport to Durham
costs about 40 GBP when booked in advance from Paddys Taxis (0191
386'6662). The drivers do not accept cheques or credit cards. If taking
a non-prebooked taxi, ask the driver to drive to Grey College, Durham;
it may be useful to have a printout of the map
handy, as drivers from Newcastle are not likely to know details of the
Durham area.
Pick-Up for Prebooked Airport Taxis
The taxi will be waiting in the 'pick-up' point which is located just outside of the main airport arrivals doors, to the left and across the road next to the bus shelters. The taxis can stayin the pick-up area for only 10 minutes, so you may have to wait a bit. Look out for taxis labelled "Paddys Taxis" and make yourself noticeable to the driver. He will drive you to the reception of Grey College, see map.
By Car
Durham is about 30 min. by car south of Newcastle upon Tyne. Find the A1 and leave it at exit Durham.
By Bus
There are bus connections to Durham or Newcastle from most major cities in England.
By Rail
The Intercity East-Coast line links Durham with London King's Cross and Edinburgh. Most Intercity trains stop in Durham. Otherwise you have to take a local train or taxi (less than 20 GBP) from Newcastle Central station. Timetable information is available from Railtrack. The Institute is located in the Ogden Centre for Fundamental
Physics, adjacent to the main Physics Department building on the
University Science Site. If you are arriving by train it is a 20 minute
walk from the railway station to the Department, or you can take a

Grey College
Grey is situated on South Road very close to the Physics Department
(see map above). They are a 25 minute
walk from the railway station.

The local currency is GBP (Great Britain Pounds). EC/Maestro and credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere and you can retrieve GPB with your cards from cash machines. You canalso pay the College accomodation by EC/Maestro and credit cards - all standard cards are accepted except for American Express. Please pay with the IPPP secretary, Linda Wilkinson, and not Grey college directly, because otherwise you will be charged an additional 17.5% VAT!
