Centre for Particle Theory

Costs and Funding

PhD students from the UK are typically funded through research council (EPSRC/STFC) studentships; there are typically eight STFC studentships available each year in the Centre for Particle Theory and in addition two EPSRC awards for CPT students within the Maths Department. The university also offers doctoral studentships and the Science Faculty has just introduced postdoctoral awards, which are open to all applicants.

More information on sources of funding is available from the university and departmental (maths/physics) web pages.

Course fees guide

Information about tuition fees can be found on the University's guide to postgraduate fees and finance. Courses in Mathematical Physics fall into price group B. For 2010/11, the fees for students normally resident within the European Union are £ 4,530, and those for students resident outside the European Union are £ 11,400.

Living expenses

In addition to course fees, living expenses for the year are likely to be approximately £ 8,000 for a single person. For more detailed information please see the university's information about the cost of living.

Sources of funding

These notes are intended as a rough guide only. Consult the University funding database for more information about sources of funding.

Funding available through the department for British and overseas students

  • EPSRC/STFC studentships Available to students from the UK and other EU countries. Provide full fees plus a stipend for UK students, fees only for other EU students, for 3.5 years. In recent years there have been four STFC awards and around five EPSRC awards annually. Most UK PhD students in the department are supported on these studentships.
  • Project Studentships Studentships linked to specific research projects are sometimes available. When applying for these you should be careful to adhere to any special requirements and application dates. Please contact Paul Heslop,Chong-Sun Chu or Silvia Pascoli for further details.
  • Durham Doctoral Studentships The university funds a small number of studentships, paying full fees plus a stipend at the research council level. All applicants are eligible for these studentships, but they are highly competitive; at least a good first class degree or equivalent will be necessary. We encourage students who wish to be considered under this scheme to apply as early as possible. More information about these awards.
  • Faculty of Science Doctoral Awards for entry in October 2011 The Faculty of Science is offering a number of studentships and fee-waivers for PhD research to start in October 2011. Awards are only likely to be made to outstanding candidates who can demonstrate very strong potential to perform at doctoral level. Awards will be made for full studentships (fees plus maintenance), fee-waivers and part-funding. Fee-waiver awards will be made for those Chinese candidates applying also to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) scheme. Applications should be made via the normal route for postgraduate applications at Durham, noting on your application that you wish to be considered for a Faculty Award. Deadlines for applications are given below:

Deadlines for candidates applying through the China Scholarship Council (CSC)
Deadline for application to be received along with all supporting documentation required: 21/01/2011
Results announced to successful candidates: 18/02/2011

Deadlines for all other candidates Deadline for application to be received along with all supporting documentation required: 28/02/2011
Results announced to successful candidates: 31/03/2011

  • The Nick Brown Memorial Trust The trust provides travel bursaries (typically one per year) either to allow a student from a developing country to travel to Durham to take up their studies or to allow a student already in Durham to travel to a meeting or to pursue part of their studies elsewhere. Recommendations for these bursaries must be sent to Frank Krauss.
  • Paid Tutorial Work Postgraduate students are usually encouraged to do a limited amount of tutorial and similar work and can usually earn about £1000 a year in this way. This is in addition to any of the awards mentioned above.
  • If you wish to be considered for support available through the department you should say so on your application form: no separate application is needed. Because of changes in the funding bodies' timetables, we are encouraging applicants to apply earlier than in the past. We encourage PhD applications before the 15th of December . Later applications may still be considered for these awards, but early applications are ensured of full consideration.

    Other sources of funding

For overseas applicants, there may be funding available from your own government or from independent foundations. A few links to opportunities we know about are given below, but we encourage you to seek more information from other sources. The universities' funding pages may offer more options. The offices of the British Council in your country of residence, or your current universities' careers service, may also be able to provide information on suitable awards.
